Nestled at the southernmost tip of Argentina, Ushuaia is known as "The End of the World." This enchanting city, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and the icy waters of the Beagle Channel, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and fascinating history.
Activities in Ushuaia:
Maritime Museum and former prisión:
In the pavilions of the Ushuaia‘s old prison you can find the Maritime Museum, the Antarctic Museum and a Museum of Marine Art. This place contains the history of famous shipwrecks and indigenous peoples, European seafarers and their expeditions, the stories of missionaries, ranchers, gold prospectors, smugglers, sea lion hunters, explorers, political prisoners and inmates, early Antarctic expeditions, classic and modern works of art, and more.
Inside the museum there is an art gallery with traveling exhibits, a book and souvenir shop, and a coffee shop in the central hall that also acts as a place for events. If you go out into one of the internal courtyards, between the pavilions, you will find the old bakery where numerous films have been screened and theater plays have been performed.
Walking through these corridors is a way to live the history of what was once an inhospitable corner, visited by a few adventurers or by those who were sent to pay their sentences at the End of the World.
The old prison is part of the origins and development of the local community. Built by the prisoners themselves, it is a living heritage of the island of Tierra del Fuego in particular the city of Ushuaia.
End of the World Train
Besides traveling a picturesque path the little train tells the story of the prisoners that served their criminal sentences in Ushuaia. Aforetime, the train left from the prison towards the slope of the Susana Mountain with the objective of obtaining materials (wood and stone) for construction.
The End of the World Station is an iconic place where you will be able to see the maintenance workshops, old pictures and you can buy souvenirs at the gift shop or have a drink at the coffee store while you wait for the departure of the train
City Tour
In a city tour aboard comfortable vehicles you will get to know the history and culture of the end of the world. The old town, the best panoramic views and the secrets of the city, accompanied by a guide in different languages who will explain each place.
A city tour is the ideal opportunity for both adults and children to enjoy a family activity and have a broad view of Ushuaia.
The conventional tour is offered in different travel agencies of the city; they also give you the option of doing a city tour on foot together with a specialized guide, visiting the city's points of interest and with the possibility of visiting some of the museums.
Most of the buses leave from the port and visit the civic square, the old Government House, cross the footbridge to have a panoramic view of the city, the old neighborhoods and the viewpoint of Las Hayas on the Martial road to appreciate the Beagle Channel from above; these are just some of the points that the city tour covers.
Another way to do this city tour is on the City Train: an adapted bus that imitates the shape and atmosphere of the Train at the End of the World. This option is offered once winter ends and offers an audio guide.
The other way is to take the city tour in a double-decker bus, the Double Decker. In this old-fashioned bus you will go around the corners of Ushuaia along with a historical narration and the possibility of taking pictures from a privileged angle. The Double Decker operates from November to May.
Sailing to the penguin colony
About 90 kilometers from Ushuaia lies Martillo Island, better known as "the penguin colony," the only one in Tierra del Fuego.
Between October and April, it's possible to see two species of penguins that come to spend their reproductive period on this island in the channel: the Magellanic penguin and the Gentoo penguin, albeit in smaller numbers. Occasionally, you may be surprised by King Penguins.
There are different excursions that take you to see this incredible place.
Some providers start the tour from the commercial pier, passing by some islands until reaching the penguin colony.
Others include the transfer to Puerto Almanza, and from there, the navigation begins. This tour, depending on the company you hire, can be done by sailboat or motorboat.
The last option includes the transfer to Estancia Harberton, from where the navigation starts, and a walk through the penguin colony.
Overflights
If you think Ushuaia is amazing from land overflying it will leave you speechless. Even if it is from a helicopter or a small plane, this could be a great opportunity to take. From there mountains seem so close that you can feel you can touch them. The image of the Beagle Channel and the Andes Range with the thrill of flying it is an unforgettable experience.
Both Heliushuaia and the aeroclub offer different options to enjoy this activity. You could take a city tour or go to Laguna Esmeralda or even land at the top of the Andes Range.
You have to book it in advance and remember the activity is subject to weather conditions.
